So, I woke up to the news of anonymous mails being sent to bloggers, with Beyonce’s “Grown Woman” and “Standing On The Sun” attached. One of them decided to feed the fans with half the food he was given, so he let “Grown Woman” surface online. Now that we have it in full, let’s break it all down to the pros and cons. We’ve more or less heard of the song so we all know what to expect, but allow me to say I expected more, to begin with. You got to give her props for all the different elements that were used to put the instrumental together, especially that bassline, and she’s all sorts of fierce as she sings the boasting lyrics. The African breakdown is also purely amazing, adding another cultural and tribal element to the song. However, after that, things fall flat, with the instrumental going on without anything special happening. It’s too long, but that could just be the extended version, a video edit or the backing track for a performance. Other than that, the production is screaming Timbaland; that meand two things: “Grown Woman” is definitely something you wouldn’t expect from Beyonce, but it’s definitely something you would expect from Timbo, so that kind of makes the sound of it dated, no matter how good it sounds. Here I am with the song not living up my expectations, even though I like the way it sounds; I just needed more. There’s a chance I would have enjoyed it way more if it was released just in time or if the live performances hadn’t already taken away the best of me. Anyway, we should all be thankful someone leaked the track and so should Bey.
